Psalm 106-108

Today's Scripture Passage

A Few Thoughts to Consider

Aren’t you thankful you can come to God regardless of your situation?

Psalm 107 is a powerful reminder of God's redeeming love. “Although Psalm 107 begins the fifth and final book of the Psalter, it continues the themes of the despicable sinfulness of God’s people along with the gracious and restorative mercy of God that are also described in the narrative depictions of Psalms 105 and 106.”[1]

Verse 1-3 say, “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; his faithful love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord proclaim that he has redeemed them from the power of the foe and has gathered them from the lands—from the east and the west, from the north and the south.”

This psalm is then divided into four distinct groupings, each representing a different kind of human struggle and God’s faithful redemption. “Each group’s affliction differs, but each calls upon God for deliverance (vv. 6, 13, 19, 28), and God hears and answers their humble cries for help. Each, then, is encouraged to offer a response of thanksgiving to God (vv. 8, 15, 21, 31), expressing the praise and worth of God in light of his gracious and powerful deliverance.”[2]

The first group represents those who wander in desert wastelands, hungry and thirsty, without a place to call home. They cry out to God in their distress, and he leads them to a safe city where they find provision. Next, we see prisoners in deep darkness, suffering in chains because of their rebellion. They cry out to the Lord, and he breaks their chains and sets them free.
